An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Staying on track with regular dental cleanings and exams allows for earlier detection of dental problems that could be treated more conservatively than if they were undetected and not addressed.
Having your teeth professionally cleaned at least every 6 months prevents the accumulation of hard dental calculus, or “tartar” which contains bacteria. The plaque that we try to remove daily with brushing and flossing can stick to our teeth and harden into calculus which can only be removed with dental instruments.
It accumulates near the gums and in between the teeth, acting as an irritant, like a splinter that can make gums sore, lead to gradual loss of bone that supports the teeth, and possibly tooth loss over time.
When decay, damaged teeth, or gum disease is treated sooner rather than later, you can have a much better chance of maintaining your oral health, and even reduce the severity of other health related issues.
